Mercury Cubs learn about Chinese New Year

Tonight Mercury Cubs learnt that Chinese New Year starts on 31st January and it will be the year of the horse. They all found out which animal they are in the Chinese zodiac and took part in a chopstick and malteser relay. They heard the story of how the animals were chosen that make up the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac - every time a particular animal was mentioned they had to run up and down the ladders of legs! Finally they made pictures of dragons which is part of the Essex Challenge 2014 and took home a fortune cookie.

Mercury Cubs Undertake Tasks Whilst Blindfolded

Last night Mercury Cubs undertook a variety of tasks and games whilst blindfolded.  This was to give them an experience of what it was like to be blind and still try and do every day tasks like drawing and avoiding obstacles. They could only rely on their touch and hearing/instructions from sighted cubs.  They had great fun and hopefully they came away with some awareness that everyone is not as lucky as them, as they all have good eyesight.  Yellow Stars and Colossal Ketchups were the joint winners of the night achieving the best scores overall.

Beavers' African evening

Last Wednesday evening we visited Africa on our recent tour of countries.   We made our own African necklaces, drums and African pots and we had great fun practising our African drumming and making lots of noise!

Mercury Cubs Rename their Sixes and Create Logos

Last week and this week Mercury Cubs have been working on renaming their Sixes and drawing their Logo.  Every Cub drew a Logo and the best one was chosen from each Six.  We now have the Colossal Ketchups (red), the Blue Robots, the White Winners, the Yellow Stars and the Green Skulls.

Cubs also took part in a Logo Quiz and will find out next week, which Six is the winner!

Pioneering night

This evening Cassini cubs took part in a pioneering night. They made bridges out of straws and cellotape. The bridges had to span 30cm and be strong enough to support a tennis ball.

Then they learnt about Morse code and cracked some messages written in Morse code.

Finally they completed their first challenge of The Essex Challenge 2014 which was to build a shelter inside their meeting place out of materials of their choice. We chose card board boxes. Wow! Four rolls of packing tape from poundland and card board boxes keep 27 cubs amused for over half an hour!!
